A Brief History
During the beginning of the 19th century, ophthalmology was still an unknown science until an epidemic of trachoma has struck soldiers from the Napoleonic wars. With the epidemic as a driving force, London surgeon Astley Cooper and John Cunningham Saunders successfully founded the first eye hospital in the world in October 1804.
As the number of patients seeking eye treatment drastically increased, the hospital was driven to move to a larger site in 1822 and finally to Moorfields main site existing presently on City Road, central London, in 1899. The hospital was still operating as a charity where patients are given admission cards that state that the cards are only granted to the poor and shall not be abused for its charitable purposes. The decision of treatment will vary on clinical findings such as the severity and rate of ROP progression, gestational age, birth weight, and ethnicity.
