Botulinum Toxin (Botox) for Wrinkles on the Face

Injections of botulinum toxin are commonly used to reduce wrinkles. These injections help most people get rid of wrinkles. However, wrinkles may appear the same to some people even after the procedure. Discuss your expectations for botulinum toxin injections with your doctor. If injections do not work for you, he or she can advise you on additional wrinkle-reduction treatments.

Are Botulinum Toxin Injections Available to Everyone?

Before receiving botulinum toxin injections, you must be healthy and at least 18 years old. Botulinum toxin should not be given to some people. They are people who:
● are afflicted with a neuromuscular illness (such as multiple sclerosis or myasthenia gravis)
● are pregnant or breastfeeding a child
● experience a lack of strength in particular facial muscles
● have ptosis (drooping eyelids), extensive facial scars, or facial features that are uneven/asymmetrical
● have skin issues around the injection site

If you want botulinum toxin injections, be sure to tell your doctor about your medical history and any prescription medications, vitamins, or herbal supplements you are taking.

Botulinum toxin injections can help, but they might also create adverse effects or other health issues. The following are examples of common side effects:
● a migraine
● irritation, tears, or redness of the eyes
● bruising, or redness around the injection site. If you take aspirin or other blood-thinning medication, this is more likely to happen. Ask your doctor if you should wait a few days before obtaining a botulinum toxin injection to cease taking certain medications in preparation for the procedure.

Take note that drinking alcohol 24 hours before treatment increases the likelihood of bruising and redness.

Ptosis (drooping eyelids) is a less prevalent but more dangerous side effect. This can make visibility difficult. When the botulinum toxin wears off in a few months, the ptosis should go away. Other solutions should be discussed with your ophthalmologist.

Are You Considering Botulinum Toxin Injections to Treat Wrinkles?

After a botulinum toxin injection, your doctor may recommend using eye drops or ointment to help lessen the risk of side effects. For around 4 hours following the injection, you may be requested to sit straight (avoid lying down) and avoid pressure on the treated area. In addition, your doctor may advise you not to exercise for 24 hours following therapy.

Consult an ophthalmologist or eye surgeon. They are the ones who know the most about your eyes, including the muscles and structures that surround them.
